What is a Nanogrid?
Everyone wants to be independent. But until recently, people depended on the local power supplier (usually a monopoly) to provide their house with adequate power.
Hospitals, hotels, fire stations, and police were the exception. When everyone else lost power, their buildings had backups. Those are generally what people refer to as microgrids. They are independent power supplies that can generate electricity and keep facilities functional for a temporary period of time. They are separated from the main power grid and are automatically triggered to jump on in the case of an emergency, low power, or lost power.
But enter the age of the Nanogrid. Most of what people call a microgrid is actually a nanogrid. Microgrids are generally much bigger and can encompass an entire city block, like a hospital or university. A nanogrid is when you make your home totally independent by supplying it power and the automated triggers necessary to separate it from the grid. Generally nanogrids are a single home or office and do not share power with neighbors.
