Austin Freeze – Ice Storm Leaves Hundreds of Thousands Without Power

The city wasn’t ready for it. They didn’t have enough trucks to fix all the power outages. It lasted 3-4 days. Even longer for some people. Our power was back on in a few days. It affected maybe 30% of the homes in Austin.

Check out this video by the Austin Local news:

Our house had lights on, and everybody else’s was off.

Most of the people had to go get hotels. Some of the people left town. I talked to a lot of young families with kids that had to go to a hotel. Of course we couldn’t do that with our golden lab because she’s too big for a hotel. The schools were closed, and the roads weren’t bad, but the power in their homes was out!

Make a portable power source without spending $20,000 to have your house rewired:

I plugged in a couple of ECOFLOW power supplies and an ECOFLOW inverter together, and all the important things in our house were powered.

Two ECOFLOW power supplies and an ECOFLOW inverter in the middle

From this particular setup, we were able to run the refrigerator, and the space heater, and several lights, and even the blow dryer!

My wife had to dry her hair for a meeting. We had hot water for a shower, but a hairdryer draws about 1000W, and that’s really pushing it. It was a real luxury to be able to provide that to my wife during a power outage.

This setup is not automatic. It’s manual to plug in when the power goes out, but it’s something to have as a backup. These things are about $3000-3500 a piece, so just to have one is not too much to spend.

I also had a generator that looks just like these same battery systems, but it’s a gas-powered generator. So I put that on the back porch. I ran a cord in through the doggie door to power one of these, and then it was powering the rest of it. Because the rest of them were back by the bedroom.

It makes a lot of sense. It saves money and keeps the lights on. In fact I had so much power, I lent an extra battery to my neighbor so he could have power.

What we used it for was to power a space heater, but the really exciting thing is to be able to power the blower on a gas furnace. It’s a relatively simple modification to add a plug to the power cord on the furnace. (You should have a licensed electrician add that.) Then the furnace can be plugged into the the ECOFLOW Delta Pro.

Get one or two of these right away. You can order them now. I have some in stock.
